Expressive Fields of Color and Gestural Marks
Meet Stephanie Jona Buehler
Abstract Artist – Alexandria, VA
I have been making art for as long as I can remember—first under the guidance of my mother, an abstract artist, and my father, a self-taught oil painter of California’s wild landscapes. Although my professional life began in psychology—earning advanced degrees and working as a psychologist and sex therapist—art remained a constant thread. Today, I work primarily in acrylic for its fluidity and transparency, often layering graphite, collage, metallics, and other mixed media. My compositions emerge through intuitive gesture and the gradual building of translucent layers, creating pieces that hold both movement and stillness. Art heals, and that is why most of my current work is bright and joyful.
Eros is not just passion, but the alchemy of energy becoming form, a force for growth and change.
Energy / Growth / Joy
From California to my new home in Virginia, my work reflects the alchemy I experienced as I transitioned from one coast to another. As an artist, I am influenced by Emily Mason, Cy Twombly, and Henri Matisse. As a psychologist and sex therapist, I paint energetically, using intuition and feelings in my body to guide my gestures.
